Aerobics for Bad Knees

Q: I need to know the best aerobic exercise size for weight loss, that is not bad on your knees. I want to lose around 30 pounds, I am a 24 year old female. Thanks for your time. I am 5'6" and weigh about 160.

A: I need to know what sort of athletic background you have and the fitness activities in which you have been involved. What is the nature of your knee trouble. Also are you looking to exercise inside or outside? My response will vary depending on how you answer these questions.

Probably the most effective aerobic exercise is cross country skiing. It is non-jarring and utilizes almost every muscle group. Nordic Trak(sp?) is good if you don't have access to a lot of snow. In-line skating is great fun and great exercise and it is easy to learn. Walking is always good as is the rowing machine. The rowing machine is a very effective exercise and it's emphasis is on the upper body (mostly back). So there are many exercises from which to choose. Find the combination that is right for you.

Generally, what I recomend is a combination of weight bearing or resistance exercises and aerobics. The increase in your muscle density (not size) will automatically help you lose bodyfat.

Good luck and get going,
